What I Look For In Branches And Originators
Not everyone is a great fit for everyone, the most important thing is you find the right fit for you.
One Size Doesn’t Fit All
What I’ve learned in the mortgage industry is that one size doesn’t fit all. There is not 1 way to do things, yes there are fundamentals that you need to succeed and that every successful person has but just as important is making sure your views, goals and values align with where you are at. Below are the key thing that I look for.
Attributes I Believe Lead To Success
Originators:
- Drive
- Willingness to learn and understanding that you don’t always know everything.
- Ability to work with a team.
- Viewing your job as a career not a job.
Branch Managers:
- Someone that knows how to run their own business and looks at this as “their” business not a “branch.”
- A leader that can build a cohesive group to achieve a common goal.
- A track record of being a top originator that knows how to do more loans and can show other show to do more loans.
- Someone who is always willing to learn and get better.
What I Believe A Company Should Give Their People
I believe that as a whole the mortgage industry as a whole has missed the mark when it comes to the company/originator dynamic. Somewhere along the lines the mortgage industry almost created an attitude that an originator should feel lucky that they get to do loans for their company and because of this originators are always operating at a heightened sense of alert to make sure they are not getting taken advantage of. What happened to the partnership, the mentoring the teamwork from both sides?
It’s my belief that the company is there to provide an efficient, supportive, fair and steady platform that allows originators to grow and reach their goals. That doesn’t mean the company doesn’t make a profit or cuts margins to make pricing their only pitch. It means the company needs to understand what an originator needs, invest heavily in their operations team, take feedback from originators to build out the support and provide the tools, investors and an efficient process to allow originators to thrive. The company needs to be the foundation, the one thing an originator can count on to remain consistent in what we all know is a volatile market.
The company is the ship, the operations team is the sails and the origination/sales team is the wind. If the boat is taking on water no matter how hard the wind blows or how great the sails of the boat are it won’t go anywhere and if it does it will be slow and painful. If you have the best boat but the sails have holes in them and the wind is strong the boat won’t go anywhere. Just like you have the best boat, the perfect sails but the originators create no wind, then the boat won’t go anywhere. The company’s job is to makes sure the boat and the sails are perfect and at that point it’s just up to the originators to create enough wind to get their destination.
